Censors Edit Kathy Griffin Emmy Speech

Kathy Griffin’s Emmy acceptance speech, which was taped, will be edited before it airs on the upcoming E! channel broadcast. E! will show the taped portion of the Emmys on Saturday, though the prime time Emmys will be broadcast live on FOX Sunday night. In a Monday statement, The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences called Griffin’s remarks “offensive” and said they would not be part of the E! telecast. Here’s what Griffin said: “A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.” She then held up her word and announced, “This award is my god now!” Religious critics are already calling Griffin’s words a “hate speech” and “blasphemous.”

An Open Letter—In Defense of Britney Spears
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, MTV, Editorial, Gossip,
Dear Video Music Awards viewers:
We’re probably all tired of talking about Ms. Spears and her disastrous performance by now…but I’d been thinking about The Biggest Loser premiere last night and I just had to get this off my chest: Britney isn’t fat.
Yes, she’s bigger now than we she last appeared on the VMAs.
Yes, she would have looked better in the corset.
Yes, I’m sick of this alter-stripper persona that she has taken on.
But dang—I thought she looked pretty good for someone who’d drinking frozen margaritas non-stop. And heck, I’m just happy she didn’t wear those ugly brown boots onstage!
You can call her a train wreck, bad mother, lost child all you want….but let’s lay off the weight.
Yeah, you heard me right. I’m actually defending Britney. But make no mistake—I’m only defending her on this one issue. For those of you who read my first open letter to Britney, I still stand behind everything I said then.

Jon Stewart Repeats as ‘Oscar’ Host
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Late Night, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, Daily Show, The,
After cranking out a bloated and boring Oscars ceremony last February (Sorry, Ellen!)—the producers have gone back to square one. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart, who helmed an extremely witty telecast two years ago, has been asked to host The 80th Annual Academy Awards. This will be Stewart’s second time at bat.
Anyone who read our coverage of his stint knows how giddy I was about Jon Stewart’s performance. All this time has passed, yet I can still remember him telling the audience ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ was how George Clooney ended most of his dates. (Okay—I actually read that in the previous post…but I swear it was etched in my brain).
It’s obviously too soon to say which movies will be nominated at this point—but I’m already imagining the movies Stewart could parody in his opener. Maybe he could be deserted with Captain Jack Sparrow? Or he could party with the boys of Superbad? Better yet—maybe he could do a musical number from Hairspray?
The ballots will be read Sunday, Feb. 24th on ABC.

Justin Timberlake Wins Emmy For HIs ‘D—- In A Box’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Comedy, Late Night, Music, Prime Time, FOX, NBC, Saturday Night Live, Internet,
Just a day before racking up Moon Men at the VMAs, Justin Timberlake added a more significant statue to his mantle: an Emmy. It’s probably the only award he received last weekend that was actually about a video.
Timberlake and Andy Samberg‘s work on the digital short, ‘D—- In A Box’, earned them the Outstanding Original Music & Lyrics honor at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The performance, which originally aired on Saturday Night Live last December, has been an internet favorite ever since.
Does an award for this racy segment mean the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has suddenly become hip? Probably not, but we can always hope. Be looking for the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards to air this Sunday (9/16) on FOX.

For those that missed the black bikini-clad Britney Spears at the VMAs last night, there are videos all over the Web and clips all over the TV. Immediately after the broadcast, the E! network started running a ticker bashing Brit’s performance. MTV’s broadcast might have been a comeback chance for Britney Spears, but her performance is getting headlines for different reasons. As stars like Sean “Diddy” Combs looked on in confusion, Spears lip-synched her way through a performance that wasn’t on beat, contained less-than-thrilling dance moves, and fell completely flat with fans. Between Brit’s bomb and the fist fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, the artists who won awards were treated more like afterthoughts amid the electric-blue tables that crowded the main room, and the chaotic suites that hosted live performances. Despite encouraging words from fans and other artists, Spears still seems more like a slow-motion train wreck than pop superstar.

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, Cable, MTV, Cable/Satellite,
Before this evening’s festivities begin, the producers of the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards should really thank the scandal-plagued artists who’ve unintentionally thrown publicity their way. Tonight, we’ll be thinking about those performers who’ve canceled because they need to be in rehab (Amy Winehouse) and closely watching those who should probably go back (Britney Spears).
We’d been warning you for weeks that this would be a one-time only telecast, but in case you forgot—we hope this helps. And for those who live on the West Coast (like me), you can play along and read our coverage as if it were in real-time:

Britney Spears Staging a Comeback
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Prime Time, MTV, Gossip,
Justin Timberlake brought SexyBack, but can Brit bring herself back from the tabloid nightmare she has fallen into? Britney Spears has released a new single called Gimme More - a catchy tune that’s burning up radio waves. The song opens with Britney’s voice, rife with attitude: “It’s Britney, bitch” – but don’t worry, it does get a little better from there. Spears will also be performing at the MTV VMAs this year, a stage she once made famous when she exchanged a sultry, mid-song kiss with pop Queen Madonna (whose crown will never truly be taken, all kisses and pop princesses aside).

Only One Chance To Watch MTV’s VMAs
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Music, Specials, Cable, MTV,
I’m honestly not sure if anyone cares anymore—because I know I stopped a long time ago—but don’t say I didn’t warn you…
Unlike recent years when you could catch a rerun of the MTV Video Music Awards for weeks on end (usually following an episode of Sweet Sixteen), the cable channel has finally smartened up and made it a more exclusive event. Why cheapen a show by milking it to death? Then again, this is coming from a network that has already cheapened it’s image thanks to the mere presence of Next and (
insert the name of any other MTV show here).
So in hopes of bringing back the audience that has disappeared during the show’s premiere time slot, the channel will air 2007’s telecast one time only. In other words, they are basically following the lead of every other high-profile awards program (e.g. The Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes) that forces people to gather in large numbers at one time. Additionally, the network is promising to revamp the telecast overall and has even brought on uber-producer Timbaland to be the evening’s musical director. Now if they can promise me that Britney Spears will make the rumored surprise appearance (and does a trash-tastic performance at that)—I’ll be there. Better yet, I hope she cancels unexpectedly.
Take note: The Moon Men will be handed out on September 9th from the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.
